The Gunwalker Scandal:
Overview and Timeline, Part 2 (of 2)
(updated March 31, 2014)
January 1, 2012 – Gun Rights Examiner: AP ‘top 10’ list confirms media still ignoring Fast and Furious Story. iwatchnews.org: Gambling with guns.
January 2, 2012 – Narcosphere: CBS News Poaches Narco News’ Drug War Coverage. Honduras Weekly: Holding the United States Accountable.
January 4, 2012 – House Oversight Committee Press Release: Attorney General Holder to testify Feb. 2 on DOJ’s response to Fast and Furious. Guess what I saw today on Hulu? A NatGeo Explorer episode, pre exposure of Fast and Furious (although the operation may have been going on at the time). They first show a Mexican law enforcement official presenting US made guns all but one of which were obviously military sourced, since they are full auto – one even had a grenade launcher! Cut to – guess who? William Newell who talks about all the guns going to Mexico from US gun shops. Then cut to a gun shop owner who is forced to say that, yes, if pass the background check you can take the gun in about 15 minutes. They do include comments by the gun store owner to the effect that, “We don’t sell guns if we think something is wrong – I don’t think any gun stores do.” – It’s an excellent example of how the mainstream press worked with both Mexican and US authorities to lie about the source of cartel guns.
Imagine what they would have done with Agent Terry’s death and the deaths of hundreds of Mexicans had Fast and Furious not been exposed. You can find the video HERE. The segment in question begins at about 15:15. The Hill: Holder to appear before Issa’s panel. Bloomberg Businessweek: Holder to Face Lawmakers’ Questions on U.S. Gun Operation.
January 5, 2012 – Chicago Tribune: ATF sidelines officials in gun sting debacle. Examiner.com: Gunrunning and the Felony Murder Doctrine by William Heuisler, Tucson Crime Prevention Examiner, makes the point that if Eric Holder ordered the gunwalking in Fast and Furious he could be charged with First Degree Murder. He believes that this may be why Holder is continuing to stonewall. Examiner.com: Breaking: ATF reportedly relieves Fast and Furious managers prior to OIG report by David Codrea, Gun Rights Examiner – one of the first reporters to break the story – reports that three ATF managers who were involved in Fast and Furious have been relieved of duty. They are William Hoover, Mark Chait, and William McMahon. McMahon was the supervisor who wanted info on F&F to use to further gun control. There was considerable controversy when these three supervisors were reassigned to better jobs a few months ago. ticklethewire.com: Atty. General Holder to Testify on Fast and Furious the hearings have been rescheduled to Feb. 2, They will focus exclusively on Fast and Furious. Chairman Issa issued this statement: “The Department of Justice’s conduct in the investigation of Operation Fast and Furious has been nothing short of shameful. From its initial denials that nothing improper occurred, to efforts to silence whistleblowers who wanted to tell Congress what really happened, to its continuing refusal to discuss or share documents related to this cover-up, the Justice Department has fought tooth and nail to hide the full truth about what occurred and what senior officials knew. Attorney General Holder must explain or reverse course on decisions that appear to put the careers of political appointees ahead of the need for accountability and the Department’s integrity.” The Washington Times: Holder facing further ‘Fast and Furious’ grilling – Issa targets ‘management deficiencies’ Mr. Issa noted that in December, the Justice Department explicitly told his panel it would not deliver subpoenaed documents relating to Fast and Furious created after Feb. 4. (Why do I think they are hiding a cover up?) Examiner.com: Grassley: New docs prove Admin knew about Fast & Furious. Direct Link to Sen. Grassley’s press release. San Francisco Chronicle: Justice Dept documents describe another gun probe. ticklethewire.com: More Shakeups at ATF Over Fast and Furious. TPM Muckraker: Emails Refute Republican Suggestion That Bush-Era ‘Gun Walking’ Was Coordinated With Mexico (We are supposed to believe that because guns got away during Wide Receiver, the operation was “not coordinated” with Mexico – even though the Mexicans gave consent for the operation and were the ones who did not intercept the guns when they were told about them!) Chicago Tribune: ATF sidelines officials in gun sting debacle.
Note on following two stories: The administration will not release documents requested by Congress on Fast and Furious – but they are happy to release documents on an unrelated Bush era program they are trying to use as an excuse.
CNN: Justice turns over more ATF documents to congressional investigators– rekindling debate. Politico: Wide Receiver gun-walking records released by Justice Department.
January 6, 2012 – Sipsey Street: Open letter to Darrell Issa and Chuck Grassley on anticipated IOG Fast and Furious report. American Thinker: Issa vs. Holder on Fast and Furious, Round Three. Main Justice: DOJ Documents Sprak Fresh Criticism of Fast and Furious. Blue Ridge Now: Fast and Furious: Who’s really the racist?
January 13, 2012 – LA Times: Another ATF weapons operation comes under scrutiny (Times reports that there may be an entire additional operation – run in the same way, with the same results, at the same time as Fast and Furious. If true, this provides a huge amount of support for the idea that guns were deliberately sent to Mexican criminal organizations in order to justify gun control in the US.) ticklethewire.com: Fast and Furious Redux? Human Events: Fast and Furious: Mystery of the White Guns – Has yet another “gun walking” operation been uncovered? Examiner.com: Groan..not again! Operation ‘White Gun’ another ATF foul-up? January 25, 2012 – examiner.com: Issa to Holder: ‘Major escalation of DOJ’s culpability’ in Fast & Furious. ABC15: More subpoenas could come in the Fast and Furious case. NRA News: Why You Should Be Furious About Fast and Furious (In a preview of the NRA’s tactics for the 2012 presidential elections, this article makes a strong case for the goal of Fast and Furious being the promotion of gun control at the cost of Mexican lives. NRA is undoubtedly going to pour millions into advertizing in order to get this message out to gun owners.) Here is a direct link to Issa’s letter to Holder. Everyone should take the time to read Issa’s letter. He makes a very good case that a major cover up is under way. February’s hearings should be the hottest yet. NRA posted two videos yesterday in which Rep. Trey Gowdy and Rep. Paul Gosar discuss Assistant AG Cunningham’s invoking his 5th Amendment rights. Key is that Gowdy specifically mentions granting immunity in order to compel his testimony – which may be exactly what he is after. Fox News: Issa cries foul after key player in Fast and Furious scandal refuses to testify Extensive coverage of both Cunningham’s refusal to testify and specifics on possible AZ charges against Federal officials – including that fact that AZ gun dealers were threatened with loss of their FFLs if they did not cooperate by selling guns to felons.

NRA News: Arizona Lawmakers Announce Plans for Fast and Furious Committee State Rep. David Burnell Smith provides a lot of info about the state investigation.
January 27, 2012 – Gun Rights Examiner: Documents say DOJ knew of Fast and Furious Connection day after Terry Murder. “…the White House has dumped more than 500 pages of documents including emails on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chaired by Darrell Issa tonight. Sources say that among these are at least one email on 15 December 2010 from then US Attorney Dennis K. Burke to Monty Wilkinson, aide to Eric Holder, informing the Attorney General office of the murder of Brian Terry and, later that day, of the seizure at the scene of Fast and Furious weapons….They also have the emails posted. Holder is screwed. …What does that tell us? That they’re protecting the White House and are willing to dispose of Holder to do it.” NPR: Emails Show How ‘Fast and Furious’ Ambush News Unfolded At Justice Dept. Feb. 6, 2012 – I just found a memo from Issa and Grassley to the majority members of the Oversight Committee. Here is one of the concluding paragraphs: “ATF blames Main Justice for encouraging Fast and Furious. The Justice Department blames ATF and the Arizona U.S. Attorney’s Office for the use of misguided tactics. Those who were in a position at Main Justice to stop the program blame their staffs for not bringing issues regarding Fast and Furious to their attention. U.S. Attorney ’s Office personnel have either taken the Fifth Amendment and refuse d to discuss the issue with Congress , or have been estopped by the Justice Department from talking to Congress altogether. As the former ATF Acting Director testified in July 2011, it appears very clearly that the Department is circling the wagons to protect its political appointees.” Source: Gun Walking To Mexico Known Outside Of ATF – An ex-federal law enforcement agent says other agencies stopped gun shipments linked to Operation Fast & Furious. Fortune magazine has published an article stating that gun walking never took place. Forget the whistleblower’s testimony. Forget the written evidence, the lying to concerned gun dealers (in writing!), the fact that Holder himself agrees that gunwalking happened and he says he stopped it. Forget the fact that DOJ withdrew a letter saying that gunwalking never happened and admitted that it was false. The real problem is the evil gun dealers and weak laws. Fortune’s source? Interviews with, and documents generated by, the very ATF managers who ran the program and are at risk of losing their jobs and ending up in prison. They really are desperate. What can this accomplish? Well, if there was no gunwalking, there was no false letter and no reason for an investigation – let alone contempt. Hmmm – interesting timing. Of course, there is a significant possibility, even a likelihood, that President Obama could assert executive privilege to avoid handing over documents to Rep. Issa’s House Oversight Committee investigation. (UPDATE: this is exactly what happened the week of June 18, 2012.) The problem with this is that it screams “cover up”, and a large number of witnesses have already provided copies of many documents. It is highly unlikely that even executive privilege could stop this investigation.
Momentum on Gunwalker long ago passed the point of no return, after which no scandal of this magnitude can be contained. We will continue to update the Project Gunwalker scandal on the RinosandRats.com and RamonaTead.com Web sites.
What Can You Do?
Regardless if you’re a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian or Tea-Party member, you should call or write both your Senators and all your Representatives. Demand that they join the 31 House Democrats who urged President Obama to order the executive branch to cooperate with the House Oversight committee investigation. Demand that they support and back the investigation and insist that those responsible are identified and prosecuted. Let them know that this is not a time to play partisan politics if they want to have a country to live in. IT IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT to contact Rep. Darrell Issa’s office to let him know that We The People support his courageous pursuit of the truth of this scandal. Duncan Hunter’s office should likewise hear from you with demands for his clear and unambiguous public support for Issa’s investigation.
CALIFORNIA SECOND AMENDMENT LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
While Project Gunwalker is still not yet well known to the public due to the 6 month mainstream media blackout that was finally broken by The New York times on June 14, and the on-going administration cover-up that continues to this day, it is without question the most “over the top” activity undertaken by the Federal Government that could impact negatively on our Second Amendment rights.
An argument may be made that unless justice is served in the investigation and prosecution of administration officials criminally involved at the federal level, the current stream of pending anti-gun legislation at state and local levels would have little significance, relatively speaking, because the threat of overturning the Second Amendment entirely, as clearly represented by the full implications of intent behind Gunwalker could render much, or even all subordinate legislation moot.
On the other hand, an alternate argument may also be made that should executive privilege be invoked and then upheld in order to thwart and nullify the investigations and prosecution of the Gunwalker scandal, the damage done by the Obama administration to itself at this point by Gunwalker has been so extensive that the window of opportunity for Holder, Melson, Napolitano, Clinton, Obama, et al, to continue to exploit a scenario of their own creation and/or approval to advance their well documented gun control agenda is likely closed. This is underscored by the fact that Gunwalker has already proven to be directly linked to the murders of 2 US citizens, and hundreds of citizens of Mexico.
Regardless of whether or not the administration is successful in rendering itself immune from criminal prosecution by invoking executive privilege, there is plenty happening under the radar right here in California that could ultimately have greater potential impact on the Second Amendment.
In Sacramento there were 30 2nd amendment related bills introduced into this current legislative session…the overwhelming majority crafted to limit and take away our rights.
The more significant of these bills can be routinely tracked on the web sites of the NRA, the Second Amendment Foundation, Gun Owners of California, the California Rifle and Pistol Association, and the Calguns Foundation…among others.
What Can You Do? (Part II) – GET INFORMED AND GET INVOLVED!
The Calguns Foundation (CGF) is one of the nation’s most influential 2nd Amendment legal protection organizations, and a 501(c)3. The attorneys on the Calguns board are the same attorneys who have by their own efforts established the primary legal avenue of resistance against the tide of anti-gun legislation in Sacramento. These attorneys are Top Drawer, active volunteers working largely pro bono. CGF has literally turned the anti-gun “battleship” around in Ca. Calguns hosts the excellent CalGuns.net Forums (www.calguns.net) These Forums are very active and well monitored. Generally, Forum participants are extremely well informed, and NO NONSENSE. Many consider the CalGuns Forums to be the “go to” resource for up to the hour status on all existing and all pending 2nd Amendment legislation in CA. In fact, the legal resources on Calguns.net are heavily relied upon by not only the arms industry, but by top CA law enforcement, since CA law enforcement has not been able to depend on The State for either assistance, or accurate or truthful information for years. The following is a brief introduction of CGF activities monitored on Calguns.net.
UPDATE 10-9-11: CGF now has a “volunteer board” up at http://calgunsfoundation.org/volunteer.html

Here are some suggestions for what people can do to get involved and support Calguns Foundation’s efforts, and generally help the cause here in California. The following are CGF needs, action items, drills, tasks and other ways to support the Second Amendment.
- Print out a hand full of the latest CGF Handout and get them to your favorite gun stores, firing ranges, outdoors retailers, dry cleaners, ethnic markets, friends, family, hay and feed stores… wherever we can get the message out. Explain why these are such exciting times, and tell people how we’re fighting to advance gun rights – and winning!
- Get your friends, family and co-workers signed up as volunteers for the Carry License Reform and Sunshine Initiative. Just have them go to www.calgunsfoundation.org/volunteer and fill out a simple 1-page form. That’s it! This will be VERY IMPORTANT as we need as many people ready to roll in as many counties as possible.
- Help CGF create new flowcharts, guides, and educational tools. We have a few on the docket that would be REALLY USEFUL (master firearms flowchart, seizure/return of firearms, Roster, estate law/firearms, others).
- Translate CGF & pro-RKBA and legal educational materials into Spanish, Chinese, and other languages. Let’s work to keep ALL gunnies out of jail and solidify our fundamental human right of self-defense.
- Distribute educational tools (such as flowcharts and guides) to police stations, sheriff’s offices, park rangers, etc.
- Distribute educational tools (such as flowcharts and guides) to public defenders, and let them know we’re here to assist in gun issues. Tell everyone you know about the CGF Help Hotline (www.calgunsfoundation.org/hotline, hotline@calgunsfoundation.org, 800-566-2109), and pass along the basics:
Quote:
In Case of Law Enforcement Encounter, Detainment or Arrest:1. Remain Silent – Do Not Answer Questions2. Do Not Consent to a Search3. Demand an Attorney4. Email or Call CGF! hotline@calgunsfoundation.org, (800) 556-2109YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO VOLUNTEER INFORMATION OR OPEN LOCKED CONTAINERS! |
- Next time you get an email about the latest sale on ammo, flash hiders, or cleaning supplies, send one back and tell the management of your favorite wholesalers and retailers to step up and support your Second Amendment rights (and get a tax-deduction!) by donating to Calguns Foundation. Send a letter, fax, or email to companies like Midway USA, Brownells, CTD, Cabelas, Midsouth, Widners, Ammunition To Go, Able Ammo, Ammoman and others why their support of Calguns Foundation is so important.
- Tell Glock, Springfield, Colt, Winchester, SIG, Beretta, CZ, H&K, Kahr, Kimber, Les Baer, Nighthawk, Wilson, Para, Smith & Wesson, Ruger, SVI, STI and others why it’s important that they support CGF’s Peña v. Cid case, and how we are fighting to help them kill the Roster so that law-abiding gun owners in California can buy MORE of THEIR PRODUCTS. Mark LaRue can’t be the only patriot willing to back up his support of our rights with an ongoing financial commitment to CGF – can he?
- Get involved in helping us gain vendor support for our Carry Reform and Sunshine Initiative. (ETA: see, also, the new volunteer opportunities.) Dick’s Shootin’ Irons in Atascadero, On Target Range in Laguna Niguel, and CGTech in Irvine have stepped up to the plate in support of our fundamental rights. Reach out to your favorite FFL and ask them to help make California shall-issue by sponsoring their county today. We’ll put their color web banner in the Initiative’s county pages they sponsor.
- Get involved in the discussion of your county’s LTC permit application/policy.
- Make sure everyone you know is a member of SAF, NRA, and CRPA.
- Setup a recurring tax-deductible contribution to CGF – help keep innocent gunnies out of jail and new cases moving forward.
- Contact IDPA, IPSC and other games, let them know that our ability to enjoy the shooting sports is dependent on us winning in court.
This list is in no way exhaustive, and it’s in no particular order – I hope it serves to get the juices flowing.
Winter doesn’t have to be cold, slow and boring – CGF is bringing the heat! The question is: are you willing to get active in gun rights and take back what the gun-grabbers have stolen from you?
